State and local union movements are at the front lines in the battle to improve life for working families, strengthen and grow the labor movement, protect workplace rights and advance social justice. The AFL-CIO coordinates and supports these efforts through 51 state federations (including Puerto Rico) and more than 500 central labor councils.
An organization that directly affiliates with the AFL-CIO automatically joins forces with the state federation and appropriate local labor councils in its area, gaining:
Support of local unions and their members: Union members are mobilized, energized and skilled in assisting in organizing, bargaining, legislative and political fights.
State and community legislative resources: Through the AFL-CIO website and a private online community, union leaders, staff and activists get up-to-date tools, including model legislation, talking points and detailed analyses of legislation.
State legislators network: The AFL-CIO works closely with and has increased membership in the National Labor Caucus of State Legislators, a bipartisan network of union member and union-friendly state lawmakers. Each year state federation activists and legislators come together in a Workers’ Voice Conference to craft strategies for state legislative battles.
